Frankfurt Airport Sees Modest Passenger Growth in June 2024
In June 2024, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed 5.6 million passengers, reflecting a 1.4 percent increase compared to the previous year. This growth was partially influenced by the timing of the Whitsun holiday, which occurred in June last year but shifted to May this year. Despite the rise, passenger traffic for June 2024 was still about 14.4 percent below the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
During the first half of 2024, FRA handled approximately 28.8 million passengers, marking a 7.0 percent increase year-on-year. However, this figure remains 14.5 percent lower than the corresponding period in 2019.

Dr. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG, noted that despite the challenges posed by strikes earlier in the year, which led to a loss of around 500,000 passengers, the airport remains on target to achieve its projected annual volume of 61 to 65 million passengers. However, he highlighted the slow recovery of the German aviation market, which lags behind other regions such as Greece, Antalya, and Lima that have already surpassed pre-crisis levels.
Cargo traffic at Frankfurt Airport saw an 11.4 percent year-on-year increase, reaching 178,324 metric tons in June. Aircraft movements also experienced a slight rise of 1.5 percent, totaling 39,475 takeoffs and landings, with maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) increasing by 2.3 percent to around 2.5 million metric tons.
In Fraport’s international portfolio, most airports reported passenger growth in June 2024. Notably, Lima Airport in Peru saw a 16.0 percent increase to 1.9 million passengers, and Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports served 5.3 million passengers, up 5.9 percent year-on-year. Conversely, Brazilian airports Fortaleza and Porto Alegre faced a significant traffic drop of 53.8 percent due to flight disruptions caused by severe flooding at Porto Alegre.
Overall, Fraport Group airports recorded a 2.2 percent year-on-year increase, handling approximately 18.9 million passengers in June 2024.
